Monarch Waystation Garden
created Spring 2022

Through a competitive grant award from the Monarch Alliance, the Woods Garden Club began its project to design, create and utilize a community garden at The Woods.  The garden allows us to experiment with sustainable gardening techniques while establishing a pollinator-friendly habitat of native plants.  At least two major free family events will be planned each year for participants of all ages and the garden will be open year-round for your enjoyment.

Planting

Thanks to many garden club members, local businesses, and individuals in the community, the garden area was prepped in March of 2022 and planted in early June.  We will continue to add native plants and annuals each year.  In September of '22, local children planted crocus bulbs and this spring we will add some French Marigolds -- annuals with an incredible blooming season and deer repellant qualities.

Maintaining

With the use of a sign-up app, members take turns watering and handling other maintenance chores weekly.  Rain water is collected from the nearby roof and stored in a 325-gallon rain barrel that the club obtained with the assistance of the Cacapon Institute.  Native plants have been planted densely to diminish the existence of weeds.

Educating

Pollinators' Picnic in the spring and Monarch Mania! in the fall are two free family events at the garden.  Activities are designed for participants from 3 to 103.  Check the garden activities page for more details.

Enjoying

The garden is the perfect spot to enjoy a beautiful day at The Woods.  A stepping stone path allows easy access to interior plants while a park bench lets one take in the entire garden at once.  The bench was donated by a community organization while the installation was contributed by a local business.
