Chestnut Orchard Care for Those Helping with Maintenance

The club can send you a digital copy of a great, comprehensive planting manual from Penn State that covers everything from bugs to deer to fertilizer. That said, there are relatively few things for you to keep in mind.

Fertilizer can be added, if needed. A slow release balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10 Osmocote can be added each spring, or Miracid (from Miracle Grow) can be added as a soil drench periodically throughout the growing season.

Bugs:  Don't worry too much about them. They're usually not as big problem as it may seem, though periodic neem oil and/or diatomaceous earth can be used as a preventative. Japanese beetles can be periodically knocked into a bucket of soapy water. Be careful to leave bees and beneficial insects, or you'll end up with more problems down the road.  Avoid toxic pesticides, despite what the planting manual says.

Dan Toland and George Tenley (not shown) were the driving forces behind the beginning of the project and early plantings in April of 2016.

The two planted areas are close to each other on the Mt. View Golf Course and there is access to water nearby. '

This is a view of one area in July 2021,  The early planted trees have grown but there is evidence of cicada damage from Brood X this year.
